What Affects the Cost of Hearing Aids
Degree and type of hearing loss. Prescription hearing aids are programmed to your measured hearing results. Your results help determine which devices are appropriate.
Technology level. Hearing aids are offered at different technology levels. Features such as performance in noisy restaurants, phone and TV streaming, rechargeable batteries, and tinnitus support vary by level.
One ear or both. Many people have hearing loss in both ears and are fitted with a pair, which affects cost.
Hearing benefits. Some health plans include hearing benefits that can lower out-of-pocket cost; others do not cover hearing aids at all. Original Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids or exams for fitting hearing aids, according to Medicare.gov, though some Medicare Advantage plans include hearing benefits.
Care included. Evaluations, fittings, follow-up adjustments, warranty, and loss and damage coverage matter as much as the devices themselves.
Prescription vs. Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids
Since October 2022, the FDA has allowed over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. OTC devices are set up by the user. The FDA notes they are not intended for severe or profound hearing loss. Prescription hearing aids are programmed to your hearing results by a licensed hearing health care professional and can be fitted for a wider range of hearing loss.
