It depends on your plan. Some health plans include hearing benefits and others do not, and when a benefit exists, the details vary from one plan to the next. Coverage can depend on your employer, your age, whether you have Medicare, which network your plan uses, and the type of device. Because there is no single answer, VirtuHear offers a free hearing benefit check so you know where you stand before making any decisions.
This page is general information, not a guarantee of coverage for any plan.
How Hearing Benefits Commonly Work
When a plan includes hearing benefits, they are often handled through a third-party hearing network rather than through the main medical plan directly. Common arrangements include:
- An allowance toward the cost of hearing aids over a set period
- Set pricing or copays for certain technology levels through a network
- Coverage for a hearing exam, separate from any hearing aid benefit
- Limits on how often devices can be replaced
Some plans offer none of these. Your plan’s Summary of Benefits or Evidence of Coverage is the most reliable source, and your member services line can confirm details.
Networks We Work With
VirtuHear works with hearing benefit networks including:
- TruHearing
- UnitedHealthcare Hearing (Epic Hearing is part of UnitedHealthcare)
- Amplifon
If your plan uses one of these networks, we can help you understand how the benefit may apply. If your plan uses a different arrangement, we will still review it with you.
Medicare and Hearing Aids
According to Medicare.gov, Original Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids or exams for fitting hearing aids. Medicare Part B covers diagnostic hearing and balance exams when your doctor or other health care provider orders them to find out if you need medical treatment. Some Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) offer extra benefits, such as hearing coverage, that Original Medicare doesn’t. Read more on our Medicare and hearing aids page.
What a Free Hearing Benefit Check Involves
1. Share your plan information. Call us with your insurance card or plan details, or use our benefit check page. 2. We review your benefit. We look at whether your plan includes a hearing benefit and how it is structured. 3. We explain it plainly. We tell you what we found and what questions remain, so you can decide on next steps.
Coverage is always determined by your plan. We cannot guarantee coverage in advance, but we can help you understand it.
Paying Without Insurance
If your plan doesn’t include a hearing benefit, or you prefer not to use it, you have other options. VirtuHear offers 12 months with no interest for qualified patients and price matching. Every fitting includes a 30-day refund period and a 3-year loss and damage warranty. See how much hearing aids cost for the factors that affect price.
Start with a Free Evaluation
The best first step is a free comprehensive hearing evaluation with a licensed hearing instrument specialist. It takes 45 to 60 minutes and can take place at our downtown West Chester office or in your home, with no-fee in-home visits across Chester County. We fit hearing aids from Signia, Phonak, Oticon, and Unitron. Hearing aids are not sold online; every fitting is done in person.
