Hearing Aid Not Working? A Calm Troubleshooting Checklist

When a hearing aid suddenly goes quiet, it can be stressful. Many common problems have simple causes you can check at home in a few minutes. Work through this list before assuming the device needs repair.

1. Check Power

  • Rechargeable: Make sure the charger is plugged in and the hearing aid is seated correctly. Look for the charging light.
  • Disposable batteries: Try a fresh battery. Remove the tab, wait about a minute, then insert it with the correct side up and close the door fully.
  • Confirm the device is switched on and not in a muted or flight mode.

2. Check for Wax and Debris

A blocked wax guard is one of the most common reasons a hearing aid sounds weak or silent.

  • Replace the wax guard or filter using the manufacturer’s tool.
  • Gently brush the microphone openings.
  • Check the dome or earmold for wax and replace or clean it as directed.

For more detail, see our guide on how to clean your hearing aids and how earwax affects them.

3. Check Volume and Programs

Press the program or volume button, or open the app, to make sure you have not changed settings by accident.

4. Check Bluetooth and Apps

If streaming from a phone or TV is the problem, turn Bluetooth off and on, restart the phone, and restart the hearing aids. If problems continue, you may need to forget the device and pair it again.

5. If It Got Wet

Remove disposable batteries, wipe the device dry, and let it dry in its case or a hearing aid drying kit. Do not use a hair dryer, oven, or microwave.

6. If It Works in Only One Ear

Swap through the steps above on the quiet side: battery, wax guard, dome. If one side still sounds weaker, the device may need service. A sudden change in your own hearing in one ear should be checked by a doctor promptly.

When to Call for Help

Call us if you have worked through this list and the hearing aid is still quiet, distorted, whistling, or uncomfortable, or if it has visible damage. VirtuHear offers hearing aid repairs at our West Chester office or at home across Chester County, including Exton and Malvern. Some program adjustments can be handled through Remote Hearing Care.

If you think your hearing itself has changed, a hearing test or hearing screening can help tell the difference between a device problem and a hearing change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my hearing aid suddenly so quiet?

The most common causes are a blocked wax guard, a low battery, or a changed setting. Check those first.

Why is my hearing aid whistling?

Whistling (feedback) can come from a loose fit, a cracked tube, or wax in the ear canal. If it continues after you reseat the device, call your provider. VirtuHear checks for earwax buildup and refers patients to a physician for removal when needed.

Can I repair a hearing aid myself?

You can handle routine care like batteries, wax guards, and domes. Opening the device or attempting other repairs can cause damage and may affect the warranty.
